Rope Wrapped Candle Holders

At least a few times a week a magazine arrives at our front door with a beautiful “Outdoor Living” spread displayed on the front cover. I’m always tempted to hop online to get the lovely lanterns, fabulous fire pits, dreamy daybeds, etc. to complete an outdoor oasis (especially at the cabin), but know that I neither have the budget to purchase nor the time to maintain those kinds of items. I do use the pictures, however, as inspiration for ways that I can mimic the look for a lot less. I love how these rope wrapped candle holders turned out, and you can’t beat the price of just a few dollars each. Materials and simple instructions below.

Framed Rackets

I recently saw a couple of great looking framed tennis racket prints at Restoration Hardware (links here and here). Although they are currently around 50% off, at $245 a piece that’s still too much for the space I want to fill at the cabin. I decided to mimic the look with some antique tennis rackets collected over the years by my mom and sitting on a shelf with plenty of other sports memorabilia in Taylor’s room (in other words, I didn’t think he would miss them). I purchased a large frame at Ikea, removed the glass and mat, changed up the color with some chalk paint (some detail on that, below) and hung the two rackets in the center. An easy, very inexpensive DIY wall décor that fills a large space with big impact. It’s perfect at the cabin where I want to avoid having all décor lean in the nautical direction. More detailed steps included below.

Banner Day

It’s always been pretty easy to come up with graphic decor for Taylor’s room. When in doubt, we turn either to superheroes or sports as a theme for him. And since the “hero du jour” is always a moving target, going the route of soccer, football, baseball, etc. is always safe. Those favorites have remained the same since he was a baby. Once again, I visited the world of scrap booking to find paper stock that would easily work for this project. I was even able to find paper that replicated the texture of a basketball. I turned to Sports Illustrated for images of the various balls and found them all in one issue. I mounted the shapes on heavy stock so they would support the weight of the image and hang nicely. I purchased leather boot laces to thread through the paper to amp the masculinity of the banner. One special touch – the seams of the baseballs were actually stitched on a sewing machine that had a herringbone stitch as a option (courtesy of grandma!). It added a realistic detail and nice variety in texture.
