Garden Dress

My parents were on our recent spring break trip, and graciously offered to take the kids for an evening so Trevor and I could have a night out together. It was his birthday, so an excellent excuse to pick a nice new (well, new to us) restaurant, put on real dress rather than a cover-up, take my hair out of its ponytail, and eat after 6:00 p.m.. I read several great reviews about this place – The Brasserie – where guests raved about the food. But the setting was a beautiful surprise. The outdoor seating was actually in the garden, where they source all of their produce. It was a quiet Monday night, and we pretty much had the place to ourselves. Everything about the evening was such a treat.

Salmon Cakes and Asian Slaw

As is usually the case with a holiday at my parents’ house, there was no shortage of yummy food this past weekend. But this appetizer of salmon cakes on Asian slaw was a definite crowd pleaser. It was a healthy and relatively light but still filling afternoon snack, and definitely enough to help curb the craving to dig into the kids’ Easter Bunny candy reserved for the hunt the next morning. Recipe below.

Turtle Farm

We felt fairly compelled to do a couple of things away from our condo during our trip, but to be honest there’s not a lot of activity to be had in Grand Cayman, outside of lounging and diving (which is exactly how we roll – well, the lounging part, not the diving). But we had the car and we had the kids, so we made our first ever trip to the Turtle Farm on the far west end of the island. It was well worth it, with the kids surprised by the massive size of the turtles and the adults surprised by the clean and pretty grounds (the property also has a small water park and other attractions, for those looking to make more of a day of it). With that said, I do believe it will be a “one and done” activity, particularly as the kids grow up and get more involved in things like snorkeling. And if they are like their parents, lounging.
