Layered Tunic

Wearing some of my favorite styles for this post, with the shape of the tunic and the stretch of the Pilcro pants. This particular tunic caught my eye because of the leather detail on the pockets and shoulders. The sleeveless nature also makes it a little more versatile, showing as somewhat dressed up here, but sporty and casual when I paired with a striped top and jeans. The 40% off sale also helped persuade the purchase.

Simple Salmon and Kickin’ Kale

Prior to this weekend, I’ve attempted to cook salmon once and kale a handful of times. None of which turned out well. My mishap with the salmon was common, in that it was overdone, but I tend to mix it up with my kale fails. Sometimes it’s too dry, sometimes too mushy. Sometimes too bland, sometimes too spicy. But my brother’s girlfriend Sara does both of these dishes amazingly well, so I asked her to share some of her tips and tricks for preparation and cooking (included below). With my efforts to make our diet and budget a little leaner after the holidays, I’ll be turning to these dishes often to make at home. It doesn’t hurt that both of my kids love the salmon, and ask for it just about as often as mac and cheese.

Indoor Kitties Go Ice Fishing

I’ve never been a big fan of outdoor activities in the winter. Ice skating, snowshoeing, and skiing (cross country or downhill) all just seem awfully chilly to me. And ice fishing? Never has entered my mind as a possibility. My kids follow along that same line of thinking, although I suppose I haven’t helped matters by not exposing them to the arena of outdoor winter sports. My parents have long referred to Taylor and Ella as “indoor kitties.” So when my brother said he wanted to surprise Taylor with ice fishing this past weekend, I thought the idea was ridiculous. However, between the snow, the cold temps and the wind, I was confident there would be any number of things to derail his crazy plan. But we woke the next day to a crystal clear, warm (relatively speaking) day. Several hours of the day were filled with a little preparation and a whole lot of snacks and sliders.
